Hi Rick,
That’s Steve Bubel center of the photo. Steve was a senior when I was a sophomore at Chula Vista HS. The 6’5″ Chula Vista Spartan ran third behind the other two guys. He went on to UCLA that fall on a football scholarship. He could play either free safety or split end. Was all metro both positions in different years. Ended up transferring to USD and had a nice football career there.
Side note on Steve he had to guard 7 foot Ralf Drollinger from Grossmont in the first round of CIF basketball playoffs. After winning CIF basketball finals Drollinger also went to UCLA on a basketball scholarship, and was a member of John Woodens last NCAA championship team in 1975. Just some side stories for you.
Thanks for the article and taking me back down memory lane.
Mel
I should have identified Steve Bubel and Ron Means of Kearny in that photo. Drollinger was no Bill Walton but he had a great NCAA championship game in San Diego against Kentucky, with solid defense and rebounding. Outside of Usain Bolt I don’t know of many 6-5 sprinters, as was Bubel. Thanks for writing, Mel.
