Day: February 28, 2019 - SAN DIEGO PREP SPORTS HISTORY

Sixteen of the 30 San Diego Section boys’ and girls’ teams remain in the Southern California regional playoffs, with quarterfinals putting everyone back on the court tonight.

Girls squads won nine of 14 opening round contests, the boys seven of 16, with most of the successes coming in Division II through V.

Three of the four male teams in the final The San Diego Union poll were wiped out, concluding with No. 1 Torrey Pines’ 82-38 Open Division defeat at Chatsworth Sierra Canyon last night.

St. Augustine and Mission Bay also exited earlier. Foothills Christian plays Rancho Santa Margarita this evening after defeating Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 70-56.

Boys won six of 11 games in D-II through V, and girls, 9-5 overall, won six of eight from D-III to V and swept in III.

The most significant victory among the males was 12 seed Cathedral’s 67-55 win at 5 seed La Canada. Most surprising loss was Montgomery’s 78-74 defeat by Los Angeles University in overtime. The host Aztecs were seeded No. 1 in D-IV and went down to a No. 16 seed.

The two girls No. 1 seeds, Cathedral in D-I and Madison in D-V, moved along easily, the Dons defeating Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 66-47, and Madison ushering out Santa Ana Saddleback, 68-20.
