Eighty San Diego Section basketball teams began the playoffs 12 days ago, boys and girls each seeking championships in seven divisions. Basketballs were rolled out for a total of 216 games and in only 25 did the seeded favorite not win, but three No. 1’s were defeated on the final weekend of play.
Seven teams, including six in boys’ divisions, upheld the CIF’s computer rankings, prevailing with their No. 1 status. The most impressive reversal was by St. Augustine, which was 3-12 after 15 games but won 15 of its final 17 to claim the D-I title and will enter the state regional playoffs with an 18-14 record.
