After restricting playoff Divisions I and II to 16-team brackets the last two seasons, the San Diego Section board of managers went back to the ”Indiana” model of the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons in which all San Diego Section teams playing basketball were eligible for the postseason play.
“I think I was one of the few who didn’t think everyone should get in,” said El Camino coach Ray Johnson. “Sixteen teams is enough. If they have a problem with whom the 16th seed should be, let those teams play it off. This way, it’s a waste of time.”
PATRIOT LADIES GET IT DONE
The Christian girls won a state championship in the last second. The Lincoln boys lost one in the last five seconds.
The frenetic finishes in boys Division IV and Girls D-V brought an end to one of the most successful seasons in San Diego County history, for teams in the lower divisions.
Poway, a 3 seed in Boys D-I, was taken out by 6 seed Capistrano Valley, 67-60, in the first round of the Southern California playoffs. No. 2 Torrey Pines was eliminated in the semifinals, 56-46, by Artesia in D-II.
Four girls teams, Carlsbad, Poway, Lincoln, and Christian, advanced to the regional semifinal round but only Christian moved on. The Patriots defeated Ripon Christian, 45-43, for the championship of California at Arco Arena in Sacramento.
Lincoln meanwhile also was in Sacramento but lost on a tipped basket in the last five seconds, 56-55, to Salinas Palma.

Hi, Rick. Just read my brother Fred’s question to you about the the paucity of football players from the Metro League not being listed in the recent posting of S. D County’s best-ever . football players.
I’d like to respond to your comment back to Fred inquiring about Gary Meggelin. Even though Gary was 4 yrs. older than me, he became my dear friend and basketball mentor after Fred left for the Air Force Academy in 1960. After graduating from Univ. of Montana in 1965, he hired me as his asst. coach in his 1st job at Nyssa ( OR) H. S in 1969. (We actually lived together until I got married later that yr.) By 1990 he had earned his Ph.D. in school administration and was the Superintendent of Winlock (WA) schools .The next yr. we joined up coaching together again at Pacific Univ. ( (OR) , where I was the head women’s coach and he became the head men’s coach. Sadly, he began to suffer from dizziness and headaches, and further examinations disclosed a large brain tumor. The tumor was removed , but it turned out to be fatal. He was flown back to his family in Chula Vista, where he passed later that yr.
Thank you for the update, David. I had met Gary Meggelin when he played for Chula Vista. He used to hang a little with a guy named Dennis Ord from Mar Vista. Dennis worked at a Rainbow Market near our house.
Good hearing from you , Rick.I don’t recall Dennis Ord, but I do remember Gary’ssummer job w/ the recreation dept in Imperial Beach. His assignment was to open the Mar Vista H. S. outside baskets from 2 pm -5 pm. I would frequently tag along so he’d have some company to beat in 1 on 1 games, which he did daily and w/o mercy for me. Fun memories.
Rick; We never met, but I have a life-long pedigree when it comes to San Diego sports.
Born in Mercy Hospital in 1942, and lived in Chula Vista until I left for the United States Air Force Academy in 1960 after graduating from CVHS. I don’t think the Olmsted family missed a football game for years, starting w/ the unbeatable CVHS teams in the early and mid-50s.
My beef w/ your listing of All-Time greatest football is simply: How can you not include some of the Metro League’s greatest ever, such as Steve Thurlow, Wayne Sevier, or Bobby Jordan?? There were not any better football players in the SD area than these young stars… and I can mention a number of other too.
What say you???
Thanks and regards,
Fred Olmsted
CVHS Class of 1960
Fred, Wayne Sevier, a dear friend with whom I worked in the NFL, is featured in the 1958 narrative. Search the year that these great athletes played and you will see that they are recognized. You and I are fairly close in age–I’m Lincoln, 1957–and I think if you go to the 1958-59 or 1959-60 narrative you’ll find a picture of yourself in a Chula Vista basketball game. There is a cartoon drawing of the Thurlow brothers in either the 1958 or 1959 narratives. I didn’t pick any teams. My goal was to gather highlights and anecdotes from each season. You can find something on football beginning in 1891 and basketball starts in 1935-36. I’m doing basketball now and would be finishing the 1991-92 year but we have been urged/ordered by the governor to stay in our houses. So I’ve had to suspend my trips to various libraries, where I have combed microfilm for about the last 10 or 11 years. That’s how long I’ve been doing this. I’m very familiar with your exploits (I’ve corresponded with, I believe, your brother). You came at the end of a great era of Joe Rindone and Chet DeVore. And whatever became of Gary Meggelin? Thanks for writing. I hope that I’ve addressed some of your concerns.
