Marks are current as of July, 2024.
Steve Brand has been covering track and field for The San Diego Union-Tribune since 1974 and updates an all-time best marks list each year. His current list inclusive of 2024 is now available below.
I (Rick) started compiling a track best marks list in 1960. My newspaper, the Evening Tribune, published record books in 1965 and ’71.
Lucky for me and track competitors, coaches, and fans, when I left the newspaper in 1972, Steve Brand picked up the baton about two years later.

Hi, i’m not sure if you have a section for this, but before they reduced the high hurdles by 3 inches Leroy Kirkpatrick from Central El Centro, California holds the all-time record for the 120 high hurdles. He took first place in the low hurdles and second in the high hurdles his junior year, which was 1933. He took first in both and set a new record in the high hurdles in 1934. This was at the state meet. No, I’m not related to him. He actually attended our rival high school. I believe CIF bulletin did a write up on him in the early 80s (1983)? he was living in Dana point California.
The Imperial Valley has had some super track and field athletes. El Centro Central also had Kirkpatrick’s teammate, Myrel Gillette, the state champion in the 440 in 1933. I think his best time was :48.3. He won the state in :48.4. I no longer have my vintage Track and Field News high school annuals, but I think Kirkpatrick’s best time in those tall highs was :14.7, which would win many dual meets today. Thank you for writing, Mark.
You are correct on Gillette. In addition to that Loe Madlam placed 2nd in the long jump. The team had brought a fourth to run the mile relay however coach Armstrong had calculated that they would win the meet regardless, so they came home to allow Gillette to rest an injured hamstring. That’s Centrals only team track and field championship. I believe Leroy Kirkpatrick‘s 2 1st Place performances in 34 the following year placed the team in third or fourth at the state meet. Thanks for the reply. This is a very cool site.
Thank you. There also was a baseball player during those years at El Centro Central, “The High” to locals, who went on to a long career in the major leagues as player and manager, and manage the San Diego Psdres in the Pacific Coast League in the mid ‘fifties. Bob Elliott.
Will you correct 3200m all time list for Brownsberger (21st). Has the year incorrect (1988). Should be 1981. Thank You.
Thank you. I will pass this on to Steve Brand, who coordinates the best marks list, which I started in the ‘sixties. Time flies.
If you look now, mark says 1981. Thanks for writing.
Please correct name spelling, in memory of my Pop:
Terry Rogers (not Rodgers),1966 880yds, Hilltop HS
Thank you
I’m pretty sure I have it Rogers in my narratives on that 1966 season or before. Are you referring to the all-time best marks list? I did not make that list, but I will correct [done]. Thanks for the heads up.
Is it too far back to include San Diego High’s State Champion 880 yard relay in 1963. No mention of earlier records.
