Why did certain teams that lost their respective title games not advance? Specifically Kearny and Santa Fe Christian?
Part of the reason and perhaps the main reason are the CIF Power Ratings. Simply put, comparing the strength and won-loss of your schedule and the strength and won-loss of your opponents’ schedules. All the Open teams automatically made the regionals. The final 4 teams in Division I advanced. The final 2 teams in D-II and III advanced, and the champions in D-IV and V advanced, 18 teams total. To keep the tournament calendar to a finite timeline possibly is another reason and, just guessing, there are probably more D-IV and D-V teams from Fresno south and the CIF had to perhaps limit the number of qualifying squads. But power ratings, instituted a few years ago, are very important, just as the various “quads” are to the NCAA basketball selection committee.
A question for you: Are you related to the Posey who played football at San Diego High in the early 1940s?
